The kingdom of frontline houses Karjasilta

Karjasilta is a residential area with a high concentration of wooden houses, which was voted Finland's best district in the 2000s.The frontline houses built in the 1940s and 1950s are uniform in size, layout and materials, and the aim is to preserve the atmosphere of the era as much as possible. There are around 200 houses from that period!

The Karjasilta reconstruction period residential area has been preserved in an exceptionally large and coherent way, and the area has been assessed as a nationally significant built cultural environment. However, renovations and extensions have been carried out, particularly since the 1960s, altering the appearance of the buildings. Today, the area has seen a variety of types of renovation or extension, sometimes alien to the identity or integrity of the area. In addition to the detached houses on the western side of the Karjasilta, there is also an apartment block built between 1950 and 1960, a school, a library, a music centre, two churches and a convenience store.
